As of November 2024 we have donated more than 304 books to 55 Primary Schools and SEND services within the U.K. Please note donations are currently paused whilst we focus on fundraising.
The Sharing Stories Project is a non-profit initiative from SLCN Stories that donates collections of books to Primary Schools in the U.K.
The books will all contribute to raising awareness and supporting children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs.
Our passion is to share inclusive stories and create easy access for children to read stories that celebrate their successes and reflect their specific experiences.
Why?
We know that there are 2-3 children in every classroom who have Speech, Language and Communication Needs.
We also know that 10% of children in the UK have long-term Speech, Language and Communication Needs which means that they face barriers in communicating and learning in everyday life.
These children are at a higher risk of being bullied at school because of the difficulties that they may face with understanding what other people may say and being able to share their own thoughts and feelings.
Children with SLCN are more likely to experience social isolation when they have difficulties communicating with peers and building friendships. They may experience anger, frustration and anxiety when they are not understood by others. They may also feel distressed if they are interrupted, teased or ignored because of their Speech and Language difficulties.
These children need to see their experiences reflected in the books they read. They need to know that they are not alone, and that their thoughts and feelings matter. They also need to be celebrated for who they are, their successes no matter how small and to know that their voice, in whatever way that is communicated, is important.
How will we achieve this?
We are a small, voluntary initiative founded and led by Sarah Moriarty, a parent who wants children like her son to have access to stories that reflect their specific experiences growing up with Speech and Language Difficulties.
You can support us directly through our JustGiving Page. We also accept book donations directly from authors and publishers.
